Hate Crimes

The Walnut Creek Department recognizes it's important to quickly investigate hate crimes. We take extra care to address the emotional distress experienced by victims.

A hate crime is a criminal act or attempted criminal act committed against a victim or their property because the victim is perceived to be a member of a protected class, including: disability, gender, nationality, race, ethnicity, religion, gender, or sexual orientation.

Hate crimes can include:

  • Physical assault
  • Insults and epithets
  • Threatening phone calls
  • Vandalizing personal property

Freedom of speech is protected by the United States Constitution. The Constitution lets people share their opinions and ideas as long as they don't violate the rights of others. If this behavior escalates to threats or criminal acts, it could be classified as a hate crime.
