Report a Crime

If someone:

• Steals your catalytic converter
• Damages or tampers with your vehicle or it’s contents, such as scratching your paint with a key on purpose
• Breaks or removes any part of a vehicle without your consent

This does not include theft of property from inside the vehicle.

If property or belongings are stolen from a locked motor vehicle. For example, your car window was smashed and a bag was stolen from inside the car.

Start burglary from locked vehicle police report

If your doors were unlocked or windows rolled down enough to allow entry without force, you’ll need to file a theft from inside your vehicle report. For example, if your personal possessions are removed from the passenger area, and:

• There are no known suspects, and/or
• No forced entry to the vehicle

If someone attempts to take your vehicle without permission, but:

• The vehicle was not successfully stolen, and
• The vehicle is still in the same place where you parked it

For example, if someone tries to steal your vehicle by tampering with the ignition.

If your property is taken without your permission. For example, if someone you don’t know takes a bicycle from your yard or your purse from a shopping cart.

Call (925) 935-6400 if the property was taken from:

• A business
• An open garage
• Inside your house

If someone steals mail from your mailbox. If any of your personal information or checks were used after the mail theft, please include this in your report.

If your property is missing or lost, but you don’t think it was stolen. For example, if you leave something in a restaurant or can’t find items in your home.

If you get unwanted phone/texts calls of an annoying or harassing nature from someone you don’t know. For example, an unknown person calls and immediately hang-ups or uses obscene language.

• You know the person
• The call is threatening
• It’s a restraining order violation

If your personal identifying information (such as Social Security Number, Driver’s License Number, credit card numbers) or other identifying information is being used by an unknown person to obtain credit, goods or services. For example, if someone gets a credit card using your social security number or gets a phone using your personal information.

Get and keep all of the following that are related to the theft:

• Papers
• Receipts
• Canceled checks
• Mail from companies

After submitting your online report, please complete the identity theft packet. You will need to print, complete, and mail them back to us in order to complete your police report.

Start an identity theft police report

If there is an incident involving the custody, care and control of children. For example, if a parent fails to drop off their child at the predetermined place or time within Walnut Creek. 

If a parent is deliberately hiding a child from the other parent, call (925) 935-6400. 

This report type is intended for cases where one parent needs documentation only for court. You must have a current order and the other party must have been served with a copy of that order.

If someone damages, destroys, or defaces public or private property. For example, if someone:

• Knocks over your mailbox and it causes damage
• Throws a rock through a window
• Sprays paint, writes, or tags your property without your permission
