Noise Complaints

Excessive Noise

Walnut Creek’s nuisance code prohibits excessive noise, including:

  • Radios, stereos, or musical instruments that can be heard clearly more than 50 feet away on a public street
  • Amplified sound that can be heard clearly more than 50 feet away without a permit or outside of permitted hours (8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends and holidays)
  • Loud maintenance equipment or power tools including leaf blowers, lawnmowers, hedge trimmers, and chainsaws in residential areas outside of permitted hours (8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekends)

Construction Noise

Construction activities that require building or grading permits are allowed only from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays, unless the permit specifically states that work outside these hours is allowed.

In rare cases, we may issue permits for emergency construction or utility work outside of normal hours if there is an urgent threat to public safety.
